BenchCam
Next scheduled broadcasts: BenchCam will be returning shortly. Building a rig for the camera!
Q&A
Why are you doing this?
Several reasons:
- It’s fun
- Motivation: I tend to work for longer periods of time on a piece if there’s some perception that I need to stick around, even if it’s just someone in a chat room yelling ‘engrave BATMANS for MEEEEE!’
- Entertainment: It’s either this or I have some horrible SyFy reject mini-series playing in the background while I work
What can I expect to see?
Random making-of-stuff. Sawing, filing, firey torch work, engraving, riveting, and whatever else I need to get the job done.
I mostly just work on whatever I feel like for the night, but will take suggestions sometimes and provide short tutorials on a technique, etc. If there’s enough interest in a certain topic, I can schedule sessions around it. So if you have an idea, let me know!
Note: I tend to use a decent amount of organics in some of my pieces. i.e. Fur, bone, quills, claws, teeth, etc. If you’re not okay with that, this channel will probably make you quite uncomfortable.
Are you a ‘real’ jeweler?
Yes and no.
I have a fancy diploma from the Revere Academy in San Francisco for completion of the JTI program. I make jewelry. So yes, I am a jeweler.
…but it’s not what I do for a living on a day to day basis. I don’t have years of experience, nor many of the little tips and tricks that come along with it. This is all relatively new to me. That said, I have some fun stuff to share and welcome you to join me while I do something I love and learn some neat things along the way.
Hey, that’s not right! Why are you doing it that way? I was told it was done this way…
I like to improvise and use whatever tools work best for my particular needs. Generally, if the technique or tools gives the right results (and is safe), then I’m going to do it that way regardless of convention. Making custom tools and finding new ways of doing things is half of the fun!
Will there be blood?
There will be blood, (but no milkshakes) on occasion, but usually only very small amounts equivalent to papercuts. Jewelry involves quite a lot of dangerous little tools and accidents happen, even when doing my best to be careful. This is why working while really tired and/or sick is not a good plan!
Did you just @#$*! swear?
Yes, I do that sometimes. Generally when the above has happened. I do try to keep it a minimum on camera though.
